COLUMBIA, S.C. - The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has closed some shellfish harvesting beds in Beaufort County, the agency announced today.
"This closure affects shellfish harvesting in all of Battery Creek from the headwaters to the Parris Island Bridge due to a sewer overflow," said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC's Shellfish Sanitation Section. "The affected area will reopen once shellfish tissue samples indicate that bacteria levels are once again suitable for shellfish harvesting."
