The advisories continue for the affected areas listed below and includes 200 feet above and below:

  • 17th Avenue South in North Myrtle Beach

Bacteria levels above state and federal standards have been detected in these sections of beach and swimming is not advised until bacteria levels return to normal.

It is safe to wade, collect shells and fish within the swimming advisory area. To guard against the possibility of swallowing the water, it's best to keep your head up and out of the water. People with open cuts or other wounds should consider avoiding contact with the water.

DHEC tests water quality along the oceanfront in accordance with federal and state laws. Enterococci Bacteria is common to the guts of warm-blooded animals and are considered an indicator of the potential presence of other organisms which may cause diseases in humans. People swimming in waters with bacteria levels higher than the state and federal standards have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness or skin infections.

This advisory is not a beach closing, nor does the advisory affect the entire shoreline. Swimming advisories only affect the small area listed. Short-term advisories typically last only a few days and are lifted once follow-up sampling shows bacteria levels decrease to levels below the standards. Please visit for more information or to view recent water sampling results along the coast.
