Board Member - Lemia Clarence Batts, Jr. (Clarence)

Clarence Batts Jr. retired in 2008 from BASF Corporation, one of the world's leading chemical companies. Over the course of his 40-year career, Batts also worked for the American Enka Company in Asheville, N.C., which was acquired by BASF in the mid 1980s. A chemical engineer, he worked in various capacities and departments for the two companies - engineering, research and development, corporate management, plant management, internal audit, information services, environmental affairs and special projects.

Earlier in his career, Batts worked for Standard Brands, located in Clinton, Iowa, and for Monsanto, the international agriculture and biotechnology corporation, in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park.

Batts earned his chemical engineering degree from North Carolina State University.

He has served on numerous state and local boards for non-profit organizations, including the United Way, the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, Anderson College, the S.C. Chemistry Council, and the Chamber of Commerce.

Batts represents Congressional District 4 on the DHEC board. He was appointed by S.C. Governor Nikki R. Haley.
