Ron Howell serves as the interim chief information officer at the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control. He provides strategic leadership and directs the planning, development, implementation, and modification of the agency's information technology-related systems and applications. Ron leads the agency in implementing and maintaining enterprise information systems to support both distributed and centralized business operations and achieve more effective and cost-beneficial enterprise-wide IT operations for more than 3,400 employees in 100 locations across South Carolina.
With over 20 years of IT leadership experience, Howell leads multi-functional teams responsible for IT project management, application development, network/server administration, security operations, web operations, telecommunications, and end-user support. He holds a certification in the Governance of Enterprise IT from ISACA in addition to other IT and business certifications.
Prior to joining DHEC, Howell was the IT director at Columbia International University.
He earned an MBA in Project Management from Amberton University and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Winthrop University.
Howell is currently working on his DBA in Information Systems and Enterprise Resource Management from California Intercontinental University.
He is the President and Founder of the Ron Howell Foundation, a South Carolina-based 501(c)(3) organization equipping and empowering leaders in Information Technology and Business through scholarships, mentorships, and professional development activities.
