Radiological Monitoring of Dairy Milk

milk bottles

ESOP collects quarterly dairy samples to determine if radionuclides have been ingested by grazing dairy cows exposed to radionuclides deposited on pastures through atmospheric releases, irrigation with contaminated groundwater, or from plants grown in soil contaminated with radioactive materials.

We collect fresh milk samples quarterly from dairies within a 50-mile radius (Dairy Milk Monitoring locations) of SRS and from background locations outside of the 50-mile radius.  We have the samples analyzed for tritium, selected gamma-emitting radionuclides, and strontium.
