What is CodeRED?
DHEC has contracted with OnSolve to utilize their CodeRED emergency notification tool. (Read more about CodeRED from OnSolve here This tool allows the Dam Safety Program to send pre-programmed voice calls, text messages, and e-mails to owners and operators of regulated dams. CodeRED messages can be sent selectively to certain dams which may be affected by a given condition (i.e. by geographic location) or comprehensively to all dams across the state.
When is CodeRED used and how often will I get alerts?
DHEC alerts dam owners and operators when it determines a potential threat to State-regulated dams is or may be developing. CodeRED alerts have been issued on three separate occasions since DHEC acquired the ability to use it: prior to Hurricane Matthew, prior to Hurricane Irma, and following Hurricane Irma. These alerts were used to advise dam owners and operators in areas forecast to receive the heaviest precipitation and winds to take necessary precautions (such as lowering pond water levels where possible), and to inform dam owners that DHEC staff would be visiting their dam to evaluate if any damage had been sustained. The program may also occasionally send out test alerts to dam owners to verify that contact information is current.

Currently Limited To Dam Owners and Operators
Due to contractual limits, the CodeRED tool must be limited to contacting regulated dam owners, dam operators, and specific representatives designated by the owner. Unfortunately, this means the general public and non-regulated dam owners cannot register to receive CodeRED dam safety alerts and notifications at this time.
How to Opt-In to CodeRED, or Update Your Contact Information
If you are an owner or operator of a state-regulated dam and are not enrolled to receive CodeRED alerts, or if you need to update any of your contact information, contact us via the e-mail address or phone number below and provide the following:
- Full Name
- Role (dam owner/co-owner, operator, owner's representative, etc.)
- Phone Number(s) - landline, mobile/cellular, office, etc.
- Cellular Network (e.g., AT&T, Verizon) - needed to receive alerts via SMS/Text Message
- E-mail address
- S.C. DHEC dam number (D ####)
