Your first call will take about 15-20 minutes.
You will be asked a series of questions about your contact information, tobacco use behavior (such as what type of tobacco you use, how much you smoke and frequency), and any quit history you may have (such as methods used and the longest quit you've been able to accomplish).
You will then be transferred directly to your own personal Quit Coach® who will use this information to better understand your personal tobacco use and ways to help effectively.
Each Quit Coach® holds, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in counseling, social work, or related field, and must complete over 300 hours of training on a wide array of topics, including cognitive behavioral coaching and motivational interviewing.
Your Quit Coach® will:
- Assist you with development of a quit plan
- Discuss your motivation to quit
- Help identify triggers to using, and
- Help you develop coping mechanisms, such as alternatives or distractions to help you be successful in your quit attempt.
You will also receive materials in the mail to assist you. If you are eligible for multiple counseling sessions, these will be scheduled during your first call. If you are not eligible for multiple calls, you can still call your Quit Coach® as often as you need. Any information you provide or discuss with your quit coach during the call is completely confidential .
General Quitline info
The Quitline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is free for any S.C. resident. Services are available in English, Spanish, as well as ten additional languages. Tailored programs are available for Hispanic, Native American, pregnant and youth callers, and smokeless tobacco users. TDD and braille services and materials are available for hearing and sight impaired participants.
