Athletic Trainer Certification

The certified athletic trainer (ATC) is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the ATC functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs, industrial settings and other health care environments.


The Athletic Trainers' Act of South Carolina (S.C. Code of Laws: Title 44, Chapter 75) (pdf) gives regulatory authority over the certification of athletic trainers to the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). The certification program is administered by DHEC's Division of Emergency Medical Services.

DHEC-EMS, with the advice of the Athletic Trainers' Advisory Committee, develops standards and prescribes regulations for the improvement of athletic training services in South Carolina.

The Athletic Trainers' Advisory Committee consists of nine members appointed by the DHEC board. Two members are DHEC staff, one is from the State Board of Medical Examiners, four are certified athletic trainers, and two are from the general public who are not certified or licensed in any health care field and are not connected in any way with athletic trainers.

The committee meets at least once each year to review the standards and regulations for improving athletic training services and make recommendations to DHEC.

Athletic Trainer Applications

Athletic Trainers should now apply electronically, without filling out and mailing the application forms.

INITIAL AND RECIPROCITY APPLICATIONS:

If you have never been certified/licensed as an Athletic Trainer, you will apply as an AT Initial.

If you have a current Athletic Trainer certification/license from another state, you will apply as an AT Reciprocity.

RENEWAL APPLICATIONS:

You should have received a log-in link in February 2021 from noreply@imagetrend.

If you have already logged into your new Image Trend account, and remember your log-in information, you can follow the link and log in: https://southcarolina.imagetrendlicense.com/lms/public/portal#/login.

If you did not log in at that time or are having trouble logging into your account, please contact: atcerts@dhec.sc.gov.

Verifications for Other States

If you are moving to another state and need: 1) A verification form filled out for another state, or 2) A verification of certification letter written for another state, please email request and form (if needed) to: atcerts@dhec.sc.gov. There is usually a 5-7 business day turn around on verifications.
