- *Wetlands are water/plant ecosystems such as Carolina bays, marshes, and swamps. Wetlands provide habitat for waterfowl and other wildlife, fish and shellfish, amphibians, reptiles, and rare plants. Wetlands also provide safety and economic and other benefits to communities by reducing flooding, and by cleaning and replenishing water supplies. It is better for the environment if impacts to wetlands can be avoided.
