Latest Update

The weather has been sunny today, with lows in the 40’s and highs in the mid-50’s.  A little steam/smoke has been visible during excavation, but no water application has been needed.  The landfill has shortened hours today and the last trucks were loaded at 12:45pm.

There will be no activities tomorrow and work will resume on Thursday, January 2.

The DHEC sensor located at Sun City failed over the weekend and has been removed for evaluation. Both remaining DHEC sensors are still reading in the “Good” range for the 24-hour average comparison to the Air Quality Index (AQI).

Please refer to the interactive DHEC map to access real time air quality information from the  DHEC air  sensors.

Total Trucks through 12/21 11,509
Total Tons through 12/21 108,459
Total Trucks on 12/30 148
Total Tons on 12/30 1,650
Trucks as of 3:00 PM 12/31 105
Tons as of 3:00 PM 12/31 1,258

Please note: The number of trucks leaving the site each day varies depending on the weather and firefighting activities. Also, the tons per truck are estimated on days when landfill receipts are not available at the time of this update.

We’ve used a combination of both triaxle dump trucks and dump trailers. Each dump trailer has the capacity of about three times that of the triaxle dump trucks.

Normal operations will resume on Thursday, January 2.

Smoke Forecast through Wednesday & Thursday, January 1 - 2, 2020:

Air quality monitor data in the local area of the fire continues to show particulate concentrations in the good range. If fire flare-ups do occur, a westerly wind will likely push smoke plumes to the east throughout the day Wednesday. Winds will be light and variable in the morning Thursday, then a southerly wind will likely push smoke plumes to the north in the afternoon. Any noticeable smoke during the overnight and early morning periods will likely dissipate by the late morning hours. However, given the latest trends in fire activity and continued fire suppression efforts, smoke is not expected to be a problem beyond locations closest to the Able Contracting Recycling facility along Schinger Avenue.

Reminder: The Able Contracting Information Hotline has been established to provide the daily forecast and allow community members to leave messages if they have additional questions. The Smoke Forecast Hotline phone number is 803-898-4262 or 1-800‐204-1842.
