What is WISEWOMAN?
The national WISEWOMAN Program is located at and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), within the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention. This program expands services provided by the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, known as Best Chance Network (BCN) by screening for heart disease, and stroke risk factors, and referring for medical evaluation, and lifestyle interventions for many low-income, un- or underinsured women ages 40–64 years.
There are currently 30 programs funded nationally. The current funding cycle ends September 29, 2023. SC DHEC is accountable to the CDC for the appropriate use of these funds.
Who is Eligible?
- Participants must also be BCN participants
- Women between 40-64 years old
- Be uninsured or under insured
- Income is at or below 250% below poverty level
- Be a South Carolina Resident
What does WISEWOMAN cover?
WISEWOMAN offers participants cardiovascular disease screenings through office screening visit and some lab work. It also covers risk reduction counseling, health coaching and CDC approved evidence based healthy behavior support services at no cost to participants. These programs support and educate women on leading healthier lives and reducing their risk in manageable realistic ways.
