COLUMBIA, S.C. - The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control has updated the status of multiple coastal shellfish harvesting beds, the agency announced today. 

The agency has reopened shellfish harvesting in two areas of the state.

"All shellfish harvesting in the Conditional Management Area of Wallace Creek and Capers Creek in Beaufort County and the Approved areas from Folly Road north to the Charleston Harbor in Charleston County have been reopened," said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC's Shellfish Sanitation Section. "Water quality data indicate that bacteria levels are once again suitable for shellfish harvesting."

The agency has also closed some shellfish harvesting beds in Beaufort County in response to a recent Beaufort Jasper Water and Sewer Authority sewer line breach adjacent to Eddings Point Road.

"This closure affects all shellfish harvesting in the Jenkins Creek and Warsaw Flats areas" said Pearson. "The affected area will reopen once water quality data indicates that bacteria levels are once again suitable for shellfish harvesting."
