Hilton Head Plantation Park Creek Inlet Restoration Public Hearing

DHEC's Office of Ocean & Coastal Resource Management (OCRM) will hold a public hearing regarding the proposed Hilton Head Plantation Park Creek Inlet Restoration Critical Area Permit application Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, at 6 p.m. The public hearing will be held at the Buckwalter Recreation Center located at 905 Buckwalter Parkway, Bluffton, SC 29910.

The proposed project consists of the excavation of the Park Creek Inlet to restore navigation, the renourishment of an erosional isthmus on Pine Island to allow continued access to the island, and the extension of an existing pedestrian walkover to ensure resident and guest access along the nature walk to the Pine Island recreational area. This project is located within the Hilton Head Plantation community on Hilton Head Island.

Community Engagement 

The public hearing will be held to provide interested people with the opportunity to comment on the proposed project. During the public hearing, OCRM staff will provide a summary of the proposed permit and accept verbal comments to be considered before making a final decision. OCRM staff will not respond to comments or answer questions during the public hearing. Written comments will be accepted through 5 p.m. on Nov. 1, 2023. Comments, along with any other documentation, photos, etc., can be submitted via the project’s Public Notice link in ePermitting. You can also submit written comments by e-mail to reeds2@dhec.sc.gov or mailed directly to Sarah Reed, Critical Area Permitting Project Manager, 1362 McMillan Avenue, Suite 400, North Charleston, SC 29405. All comments received by the end of the notice period will be considered when making a decision to approve, disapprove, or modify the permit. This decision will be based on applicable regulations, the permit application, comments made at the public hearing and all other written comments received within the required time frame, and any other pertinent information.  

What to Expect After the Public Hearing 

Once the public comment period closes, OCRM staff will review all written comments. DHEC’s final permit decision will be made available via this webpage and by email or mail to everyone on DHEC’s mailing list who requested to be notified of the final DHEC decision for the Hilton Head Plantation Park Creek Inlet Restoration Critical Area Permit.
