To operate as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in South Carolina, you must gain a S.C. Emergency Medical Technician certification from the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). To qualify, you must satisfy the following requirements:
Step 1: Successfully complete all sections of the Emergency Medical Technician course - including the didactic, practical and clinical requirements
Step 2: Pass the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) practical and written examinations and receive subsequent national registration
Step 3: Possess a current and valid CPR credential (AHA, ARC, ASHI)
Step 4: Pass a criminal background check .
Note: You must first pass both the NR practical and written examinations before beginning the background check process. DHEC will not accept background checks completed prior to l completion of the NREMT examination.
Once you meet all these requirements for S.C. EMT certification, the certification paperwork will be sent to the address you provided on the Certificate Application white card.
You should receive your S.C. EMT certification within two weeks of receiving your National Registry credential. You are required by state law to keep your original S.C.
