The former Hoechst Celanese site is located on the north side of Interstate I-85, approximately 8 miles northeast of Spartanburg, South Carolina in Spartanburg County. The 670-acre property is bounded on the east by the Pacolet River, on the south by I-85, on the north by Cherokee Creek and heavy woods and on the west by businesses and residences. Hoechst purchased the site in the early 1970s, where it manufactured polyester fiber until 1998. The site has since been subdivided and is now occupied by several businesses with Auriga Polymers, Inc. operating the main part of the site.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has confirmed environmental contamination at the site as a result of past operations. DHEC has been overseeing assessment and cleanup by Hoechst Celanese at the site since the late 1980s.
