Each year the Smart Business Recycling Program recognizes outstanding waste reduction & recycling efforts throughout South Carolina. The state has a 50 percent by 2030 - echoing EPA's recycling goal - which can only be accomplished if businesses recycle and report their progress. Smart Business Recycling Award applicants are required to report their recycling efforts and data for the S.C. Solid Waste Management Annual Report. Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center (Columbia)
The Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center (CMCC) in Columbia excels in waste reduction and recycling.
CMCC hosts every event imaginable from receptions and cultural galas to corporate functions and international trade shows and can adapt to the needs of most any meeting. The facility recycles traditional commodities including paper, plastic, aluminum, glass and steel as well as composting food waste from events and during food prep. CMCC also grows herbs from their aeroponic rooftop tower garden and donates leftover untouched food to a local homeless mission. The facility boasts Low E glass and low-flow restroom facilities, and all of the lighting has been converted to LED to extend bulb lifespans. CMCC takes care to educate their clients on their green initiatives and asks them to assist in upholding practices while in the facility.
Robert Bosch LLC (Charleston)
Robert Bosch LLC in Charleston is a manufacturing and assembly facility of braking modules, gasoline and diesel fuel injection components and systems. Some of the waste reduction activities that the company champions are volume reduction, on- and off-site recycling, and returnable packaging. The company educates employees through annual trainings and offers an incentive program to encourage suggestions and development projects that increase recycling and reduce waste. They also hold contests among their associates asking them to share what they do at home to reduce waste and increase recycling. The company is committed to constant research for ways to incorporate recycled material into their products.
Metglas, Inc. (Conway)
Metglas, Inc. in Conway is a manufacturer of Metglas metal ribbon for use in electrical transformers. In fiscal year 2020, the facility saved more than $300,000 from reusing and recycling material within their process. Metglas excels in recycling scrap metal, wood, paper, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard and slag within their manufacturing process. Overall, the company recycled nearly 87 percent of its waste. Metglas also has developed a process that yields alloy segregation so that it can be used internally again. Metglas excels in employee education, covering waste reduction and recycling techniques during orientation and yearly trainings as well as offering incentives to employees through their STAR recycling knowledge program.
